Draped with festive decorations, the Old Russell House in Detroit appears dressed for a public occasion, with the Hotel Metropole visible at the right edge of the frame. The view survives as a 5 by 7 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which copied an earlier print made around 1880, so it records the street as it looked in the late nineteenth century rather than when the negative was made. The company photographed cities and towns across the country, and its views of hotels and streets were widely sold. Images like this one help historians see how commercial buildings were decorated for parades, holidays, and civic events.
