Freight cars fill the junction yards at the Kirby Avenue freight station, a Michigan Central Railroad facility in Detroit. The Michigan Central was one of the Midwest's major rail lines, and its Detroit yards handled the steady flow of goods that supplied the city's factories and shipping. The view was recorded on a 5 x 7 inch glass negative between 1900 and 1920, when the Detroit Publishing Company was photographing American cities and industry. The negative was made to join a second section into a panorama, so the scene was meant to be read as one wide sweep of track and rolling stock.
