Detroit Commandery No. 1 of the Knights Templar, a Masonic order, is the group marching through this street during a state encampment, the gathering where Michigan's commanderies met and paraded in full regalia. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, made the 8 x 10 inch glass negative, and the record dates it only to between 1900 and 1910. Processions like this one drew crowds of onlookers, and the photograph preserves both the uniformed ranks and the everyday street they filled.
