The doorway of the State Savings Bank in Detroit is the focus here, with its doors and entrance framed as the main subject of the view. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities, towns and landscapes from the 1890s into the 1920s, made the picture as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a common working medium of the period. The negative came to the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, so a Michigan street scene ended up in a Colorado collection before reaching the national library.
