The record's title is a cataloger's guess, so the shop's location is uncertain, and the only other clue is a "Gas Co." note that may refer to a gas company sign or a nearby business. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, photographed streets, shops, and businesses across the United States in the early 1900s, and its work is valued for capturing everyday commercial life. Millinery shops of that era were busy retail spaces where customers chose elaborately trimmed hats, and the trade was a common sight on commercial streets.
