Shelby Street in downtown Detroit is the subject here, with the Detroit Free Press building on it and a First State Bank sign at the corner of Fort and Shelby. The Free Press, founded in 1831, was one of the city's oldest and most established newspapers, and its downtown home was a familiar landmark for decades. A note in the record about a business that would occupy temporary quarters suggests the street was changing as tenants moved in and out. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large glass negatives recorded Detroit and other American places before the firm became better known for its color prints.
