The auditorium of the Temple theater in Detroit is the subject here, captured on an 11 by 14 inch glass plate negative, the large format favored for detailed architectural work. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this view around 1900 to 1905, sold many such images of American cities and their public buildings. Theater interiors of that era typically featured tiered balconies, ornate plasterwork, and rows of fixed seating, and a photograph like this records how a crowded commercial space was arranged before electric lighting and later renovations changed it.
