A paper jacket marked "Gas Co." is the most specific clue to this office interior, though the Detroit location is only a possibility, suggested later by a cataloger. The Detroit Publishing Company, active from the 1890s into the 1920s, made views of American cities and landscapes, and large glass plates like this 8-by-10-inch negative were the originals from which its prints were made. Office interiors from these years record how clerical work was done before typewriters and office machines became routine.
