A bicycle shop is the subject, though its location is only a guess: the cataloger tentatively placed it in Detroit. The image survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, a large format that captured fine detail, and it belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company collection, whose photographers recorded American cities around 1900. The bicycle boom of the 1890s and early 1900s made shops like this common, selling wheels and repairing them for riders who now had an affordable way to get around. A name in the notes, possibly Metzger, may point to the business, but that connection is unconfirmed.
