A floral clock mounted on a Hiram Walker & Co. float sets this view apart from other scenes of Detroit's 1901 bicentennial parades. The firm, a distiller based in Walkerville, Ontario, just across the river from Detroit, used the float to take part in the celebration of the city's founding in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many commercial views of American cities around the turn of the century, made two close glass-plate negatives of the float, so the pair can be compared side by side. Together they show how civic pageantry and corporate advertising mixed in early twentieth-century street parades.
