The Walker Block is the subject of this glass negative, which the record ties, though only tentatively, to Hiram Walker & Sons, the whisky distilling firm that was based across the river in Walkerville, Ontario, and had commercial interests in Detroit. The photograph was taken between 1905 and 1920 as part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large-format survey of the city and its businesses. That firm, known for its colorful prints, made thousands of these 8 x 10 inch negatives, and this one reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Its catalog number and the note "G 5689" on the glass help place it within that large commercial record.
