The float in this picture honors Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French officer who founded the settlement on the Detroit River in 1701. The city marked its 200th year in the summer of 1901 with a week of festivities, and the floral parade gave residents a chance to show civic pride through flowers, costumes, and local history. Carriages were still a familiar part of American street life then, which makes this float a useful glimpse of how a city dressed up its past for the public. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture as a large glass negative, recorded many such scenes across the country.
