A flower-decked carriage bearing Mrs. D.G. Swift anchors this 1901 view of a floral parade held during Detroit's bi-centenary, marking 200 years since Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded the settlement in 1701. Such parades were a popular feature of civic festivities of the period, when towns dressed streets and carriages with blooms for public pageants. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and regional life in large-format glass negatives around the turn of the 20th century. Its 8 by 10 inch format preserves fine detail in the costumes, horses and crowd along the route.
