Sioux men in the Detroit parade stand out against crowds lining Woodward Avenue, the city's main north-south boulevard. The procession was part of the 1901 bicentenary, marking 200 years since Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded the French post at Detroit in 1701, and its civic and industrial entries showed the city's growth. The picture is a large glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its views of American cities and its later color prints. Its record also notes a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which helps trace how the image traveled before reaching the Library of Congress.
