Cadillac's body guard, a costumed group marching in the civic and industrial parade, shows the pageantry of Detroit's 1901 bicentenary, which marked 200 years since Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded the settlement on the Detroit River in 1701. The photograph captures crowds lining Woodward Avenue, the city's main north-south thoroughfare, as they watched the procession pass. Glass-plate negatives like this one were made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views recorded American cities and events in the early 1900s and are valued today as a record of street life and civic celebration in that period.
