The Whitney Building is the subject here, pictured from the southeast in a view that shows its street-facing side. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated in the city from the 1890s into the 1920s, made this 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative sometime between 1910 and 1920, a period when Detroit's population and commercial districts were expanding quickly with the automobile boom. The company's photographers recorded downtown business blocks like this one for use in postcards, catalogs, and promotional albums. The negative's survival, including its original catalog number, makes it a useful record of how the city's commercial architecture looked before later rebuilding.
