Fyfe's Shoe Building stands among the downtown Detroit commercial blocks that the Detroit Publishing Company photographed in the years before 1920, a period when the city was growing quickly on the strength of its factories and rising population. The view survives on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, the large format the company favored for its city views. The title comes from the negative's original paper jacket, and the absence of a company catalog number means the exact date rests on the range given in the record. Office buildings like this one show how the commercial core of the city was taking shape during those years.
