This view shows the art rooms of the Detroit Photographic Co. at 231 Woodward Avenue, a showroom setting rather than a street scene. The firm was known for photochrom prints, color reproductions made under a process licensed from a Swiss company, and its displays of finished work would have been aimed at customers and visitors. Two nearly identical 8 x 10 inch glass negatives record the room, dated somewhere between 1900 and 1905, when the company was building its catalog of American views. The pair shows how a commercial publisher arranged its work for the public.
