Cottage Row at Chautauqua sits on the grounds of the summer institution on the shore of Chautauqua Lake in western New York. The Chautauqua movement began in 1874 as a summer program for Sunday school teachers and grew into a broader center for education, lectures, and religious and cultural programs, drawing families who returned each season to rows of small summer houses. This color view was made with the photochrom process, which the Detroit Publishing Company used to turn photographs into colored prints. The image was included in an album the company kept as a catalog in its office.
