The sign on the central steeple reads "The Tribune," which places this view on Park Row in lower Manhattan, a stretch so thick with newspaper offices in the late 1800s that it was nicknamed Newspaper Row. The Tribune's building stood among the rival papers that gave the street its character. The picture is a photochrom, a color process that began with a black-and-white photograph transferred to lithographic stones, one for each color, and finished with hand-applied tints. Detroit Photographic Company produced it under license, and this print was kept in an album the firm used as a catalog in its office.
