The Naval Arch at Madison Square was raised for Admiral George Dewey's triumphal return after his 1898 victory at Manila Bay. Stanford White designed the arch as a temporary structure of painted plaster for the parade in the fall of 1899, and a permanent version was never built. This color print uses the photochrom process, a costly method that the Detroit Publishing Company used to produce tinted views of American cities and landmarks.
