Children at play and the Madison Square Garden complex are the two subjects the record names for this view of the square, dated to about 1901. The print comes from a Detroit Publishing Co. album that was assembled as a catalog for the company's office. Its photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, layered several lithographic stones over a photographic base to build color, which gives these scenes their soft, painted look. The Garden, designed by Stanford White and opened in 1890, made the square one of the busiest corners of the city at the time.
