Few streets in Manhattan carry as much history in their name as the Bowery, which comes from the Dutch word *bouwerie*, meaning farm, a reminder of the colonial-era farmland that once lay beyond the city's early settlement. By about 1900, when this view was made, the street was a crowded thoroughfare lined with theaters, saloons, lodging houses and shops, and it had a reputation for rough entertainment. The Detroit Photographic Company produced this print by the photochrom process, which used several lithographic stones to give photographs soft, saturated color. The result preserves the texture of a street scene that was changing quickly as the city grew.
