The Bowery was one of Manhattan's oldest and busiest thoroughfares, and this c1900 photochrom shows it at a moment when the elevated railroad ran overhead and storefronts crowded the street below. The print is a photochrom, a process that produced color images by layering lithographic stones, and this example comes from an album the Detroit Photographic Company kept as a catalog for its office, which is why the image carries the Detroit Publishing Co. number 53621. Its survival in the Library of Congress collection, through a 1955 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, makes it a useful record of the commercial street life of turn-of-the-century New York.
