The strip that gives this poster its name is "McFadden's Row of Flats," a comic written by E.W. Townsend and drawn by Richard F. Outcault, the cartoonist behind the Yellow Kid. The poster advertises the color comic supplement of William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal, which filled its Sunday pages with such strips in 1896. That year the Journal and Joseph Pulitzer's World were locked in a bitter circulation war, and color comics were a major weapon, since they drew readers and helped define what became known as yellow journalism. The lithograph was printed in New York by H.A. Thomas & Wylie, and it shows how newspapers marketed their cartoons as a reason to buy the paper.
