This poster sets a circus parade beneath the Dewey Arch, the temporary triumphal arch erected in Madison Square in 1899 to honor Admiral George Dewey after his victory at Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. The title frames the Forepaugh and Sells Brothers show as the grandest parade in "Greater New York," a reference to the 1898 consolidation of the city's five boroughs. Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati, one of the leading makers of American circus posters, printed the chromolithograph, and its elephants and crowds reflect the lavish street processions that drew large audiences to traveling shows of the period.
