Acrobats, posturers and hand balancers from the Livingstone, Davene and De Mora troupe take center stage in this c1898 chromolithograph, which advertises a show billed as the consolidation of Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers. Merging two rival traveling circuses let the combined company promote a larger roster of performers than either could offer alone. Chromolithographs like this one, printed in multiple colors from stone or metal plates, were the standard medium for eye-catching circus advertising, pasted on barns, fences and town walls ahead of a show's arrival. The Courier Litho. Co. produced this example, and its bright palette and bold figures show how circus posters competed for attention on crowded streets.
