Achille Philion, billed here as "the marvelous equilibrist and originator," is the star of this chromolithograph, which promotes the Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers show around 1899. An equilibrist was a balancing performer, and the poster presents Philion as the act's headline attraction. The show took its name from two rival circus companies that had merged, and by the late 1890s its posters used bold color and dramatic claims to draw crowds in towns along its route. The print was copyrighted by the Courier Lithograph Company, one of the commercial firms that produced such posters for traveling shows.
