Few circus posters of the 1890s promised a troupe of pearl divers from the Sandwich Islands, the name then used for Hawaii, and this one bills them as "a veritable circus of the sea." The show was the Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers circus, which had combined two rival traveling operations by the mid-1890s and competed for crowds with exotic acts drawn from distant places. Such displays fed a broad American appetite for foreign peoples and customs, presented as entertainment rather than as anthropology. The poster was printed in color by the Courier Lithograph Company, a firm known for the bold chromolithographs that brightened circus billing of the period.
