Few circus bills of the late 1890s promised as much overhead as this one, with aerialists flying over a line of elephants and twenty-five performers competing for prizes. By this time the Forepaugh and Sells Brothers shows had combined into one tented company, which filled its program with acrobats, clowns and trained animals. Chromolithographs like this were the main way traveling shows announced themselves in towns across the country, and the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati printed many of them. Their bold color and dramatic action were meant to catch the eye of passersby from a distance.
