Twenty clowns in tall felt hats tumble across this chromolithograph, promising the "frolics and amusing antics" of the Forepaugh and Sells Brothers combined show. The two rival traveling menageries had merged by the early 1890s, and their posters competed for attention on barn walls and fences in towns across the country. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York was one of the leading firms producing these bold, multicolor sheets, which used many stone or plate passes to build up their saturated colors. Printed around 1899, the piece shows how circus advertising leaned on the comic clown as a crowd-drawing star.
