Few circus posters of the 1890s advertised a merger as openly as this one, which promotes the "enormous shows combined" of Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers, two rival tent shows that joined forces in the mid-1890s. The lithograph's promise of "Wondrous Sumatra" and African and South American wild beasts and birds reflects the period's appetite for exotic menageries, which drew crowds to traveling circuses across the United States. Cincinnati's Strobridge Lithographing Company, named in the copyright notice, was one of the largest makers of such posters, and its multicolor chromolithographs were designed to be read from a distance on fences and storefronts.
