Scenes from the grand water circus, a feature of the Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth, are set out across this 1895 print. Such aquatic spectacles, with performers and animals working in a large tank built into the arena, were among the show's most talked-about attractions in the 1890s. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York was one of the leading American firms producing colorful circus posters and lithographs of this kind, which carried the spectacle's excitement to towns along the touring route.
