The lead on this sheet is the spectacle itself: a grand ballet of 300 dancers staged as part of Imre Kiralfy's *Columbus and the Discovery of America*, presented under the Barnum & Bailey banner. Kiralfy, a Hungarian-born producer known for lavish theatrical pageants, built the production around the approaching 400th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, and the poster was printed around 1891 to anticipate that commemoration. Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati produced the color chromolithograph, a technique that let large circus advertising sheets carry bold, saturated color to towns across the country. The notice of copyright by Kiralfy shows how carefully the spectacle's creator guarded his production.
