Few circus posters of the 1890s drew on a distant colonial war, but this one advertises a spectacle named for the Mahdi, the Sudanese religious leader whose uprising took Khartoum in 1885 and whose followers fought British and Egyptian forces for more than a decade. The "Victoria Cross" in the title refers to Britain's highest military honor for valor, and the "Scene 3d" label suggests the show presented a numbered sequence of scenes from the conflict. The poster was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a leading maker of colorful circus broadsides, and it shows how the Barnum and Bailey show linked its attractions to headline events of the day.
