Promising "a glance at the great ethnological congress and curious led animals," this chromolithograph advertises the Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth, one of the best-known traveling circuses of the 1890s. The "ethnological congress" was the show's label for its exhibits of people from other parts of the world, a common feature of late nineteenth-century shows that drew crowds eager to see unfamiliar cultures, though such displays often exploited the people shown. The poster was printed by the Strobridge Lithograph Company, a firm that produced much of the circus poster art of the period, using bold color and large lettering meant to catch the eye from across a street.
