Titled as "the rival riders," this Barnum & Bailey poster sets William Shoutes and William DeMott against each other, turning their equestrian skill into a contest that promoters could sell. Horseback feats were among the most admired attractions of the era, and a rivalry gave advertisers a ready-made story. The poster was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati, a firm whose multicolor chromolithographs covered billboards and fences across the country in the 1890s. Its bold color areas, each built from a separate stone, show how much craft went into drawing crowds to the big top.
