A crowded winter street is the subject of this chromolithograph from 1855, credited to T. Benecke, with sleighs jostling past one another in a tangle of traffic. The color print was produced by the New York firm Nagel & Lewis, and chromolithography was then a popular way to bring bright, affordable scenes of city life into homes. Sleighing was a prized pastime in New York during the cold months, and the image captures both the fun of the season and the congestion it could cause on busy streets.
