This color woodcut is numbered 19 of 20, so it is one of a small, hand-pulled edition rather than a single unique impression. Its title, *Carnival*, points to the fairground, but the print is abstract, so the festival's energy comes through in shape, repeated rhythm, and saturated color rather than in literal figures or rides. Color woodcuts of this kind were built from several carved blocks, each inked separately and printed in register, and by the 1980s the medium was enjoying renewed attention from artists who valued its visible handwork. The record gives the artist's name only as Monson, so the print's wider background is best read through the work itself.
