The poster's headline promises an "enormous free spectacular street carnival and big new parade," which points to a tactic the Ringling Brothers circus leaned on in the late 1890s. Before a show reached a town, its advertising crews and parade troupes staged a free procession through the streets, drawing residents downtown to see animals, bands, and costumed performers at no charge. This color chromolithograph was printed by the Courier Litho. Co., one of the firms that produced the large, vividly colored posters that covered fences, storefronts, and barns to announce such visits. Its bold color and crowded design show how circus advertising had become a fine art by the 1890s.
