Star billing takes center stage in this circus poster, which promotes trainer Alfred Court within the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey show around 1941. Printed as a chromolithograph measuring 71 by 106 centimeters, it belongs to the large color posters the circus pasted on barns, storefronts and fences in towns along its rail routes. Such posters sold the spectacle of trained animals and performers to rural and city crowds alike. Notice how the bold lettering and saturated color were meant to catch the eye from across a street.
