Sells Brothers, a large traveling show of the period, advertised this poster as a spectacle of Roman chariot racing, promising "scenes of the Roman corso reproduced" under its big tent. Chariot races were a favorite circus set piece in the 1890s, fed by popular interest in ancient Rome from novels and stage productions. The chromolithograph was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm that made many colorful circus posters of the era, building its bright colors and dramatic horses through multiple successive color impressions.
