Here the spotlight falls on the Costello family, whose aerial horizontal bar act is the focal point of this chromolithographed poster for the Sells Brothers' "enormous united shows." Posters like this one were the main advertising tool of traveling American circuses in the 1890s, designed to catch the eye of crowds in town squares and on rail depots. The Strobridge Litho. Co. of Cincinnati and New York was among the leading firms producing such color prints, and its bold layouts and vivid inks helped define the look of the era's circus bills. Note how the artwork stresses danger and spectacle, with the aerialists high above the ring, a selling point that drew audiences to the big top.
