Few circus posters of the 1910s took on a medieval French subject, which makes this Ringling Bros. chromolithograph stand out from the lion tamers and aerialists that usually filled such sheets. Its advertised pageant, billed as a "1200 character spectacle," recreated the coronation of Charles VII at Reims, the event that Joan of Arc helped bring about in 1429. The Strobridge Litho. Co. of Cincinnati and New York produced many of the bright, large-format posters that toured ahead of circuses across the country. Viewed today, the sheet shows how a traveling show borrowed grand historical scenes to draw crowds.
