Goldfield, Nevada, was a raw mining camp when this parade moved down its main street around 1907, only a few years after gold was discovered in the surrounding hills in 1902. Circus parades were among the few spectacles that could halt a boomtown's daily routine, as horses, painted wagons, and costumed performers marched through town to draw crowds to the show grounds. The photograph documents a moment when a town built on hard labor and rough living made room for a day of public pageantry.
