Titled *Circus, III*, this print is the third in a series on circus subjects, and it combines three printmaking techniques in one color plate: engraving, etching and aquatint. The record dates it to about 1950, a period when many printmakers turned to the circus for its bright costumes, acrobatic bodies and sense of controlled chaos. Artists of that era often used such scenes to explore movement, theatrical space and the distance between performer and audience. At 22.5 by 15.3 centimeters, the image rewards close looking at its fine line work and layered tones.
