Crowds gather in front of a sideshow tent in this large chromolithograph, where the painted lure of the attraction is as much the subject as the people themselves. Women and a few men in costumes meant to suggest distant lands stand on a raised platform, drawing the eye of the spectators below. The poster was printed by the Courier Litho. Co. of Buffalo, New York, around 1900, a period when color lithography made bold, cheap advertising for traveling shows common across the country. Posters like this one promised exotic wonders and helped draw paying customers to the midway.
