Here a woman draped in the flag is carried aloft by attendants in Roman dress, with crowds pressing in on every side. The scene mixes classical spectacle with national symbolism, a pairing that suited late nineteenth-century show posters meant to draw a large public. The lithograph was printed in New York in 1894 by H.A. Thomas & Wylie, a firm that produced many circus and theatrical bills of the period. The crowd is rendered as a mass of small figures, a common way to suggest excitement and a full house.
