Few things capture turn-of-the-century New York nightlife like a costume ball, and this poster announces one held under the name of the Carnival of the Artists & Writers Dinner Club at Webster Hall. Its designer, John Sloan, was a painter and illustrator who later became a central figure of the Ashcan school, and he made many commercial images for the city's bohemian and literary circles. Artists' balls like this one blended the playful theatrics of carnival with the social life of Manhattan's painters, writers and illustrators. The poster offers a glimpse of how those communities promoted their gatherings in color.
