Built on the frozen surface of Upper Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks, this ice fortress was part of a midwinter carnival in 1909, when lake towns in the region turned their frozen water into winter gathering places. Ice palaces and castles like this were a popular feature of northern New York winter festivals in the early twentieth century, often drawing crowds for skating, sleigh rides and evening events. The image is a glass plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for recording American scenery and small towns, so it preserves both the scale of the structure and the open, snowbound landscape around it.
